Here is a picture of my Gator. The secondary/driven clutch is at the bottom and you can see the belt is at the very top when it's not running. You can also see how the primary/drive clutch has opened all the way letting the belt "fall" down to the shaft. It is not tight and the belt has some clearance on either side when it's at the bottom.

Basically gave it to us and asked us to use it and keep it up because he doesn’t have a place for it at his house. Anyway, it’s nearly impossible to shift when it is idling. You have to shut it off and just hold your foot on the brake and start it in gear.
