Sounds like the stator is shorted to ground which will cause the reg/rect. to get hot. Any case the Mule is actually quite simple, only thing to watch is making sure you get all the water out if the head before taking it off. All ok now, has definitely fixed the overheat problem. Chain harrowed a 9 acre field with it, ran for hours no problems.
