Just killed the guy by Firelink Shrine. The man who sit's on the ledge and mocks my suicidal efforts to ring bells. I accidently hit him, and was subsequently forced to kill him. Was he important or were the 1000 souls worth it?

So the dark firelink is “dark” so time is still. If you killed the maiden in the normal firelink she will rise again (respawn) because time is flowing.
