Re: Mercury Black Max 150 XR2 Running Rough! My best guess is the high speed charge coil in the stator. It looks like it's getting fuel, but not firing above a certain RPM. A stuck float needle won't let it idle. A leaking float needle won't let it idle. A leaking float needle won't be noticed at high speed. They basically stand open at WOT anyway.

I have an 89 merc xr2 150 black max with the same issue I think. Was on the lake yesterday and coming up on plain running perfect it just bogged to a stop and continued to idle but I could hear a miss in the engine. In neutral I can rev it but put in gear and it dies. I got it home and checked compression and it's at 100-105 on all 6 cylinders.

Jun 19, 2019 · Help plz. 87 Mercury 150 xr2 Black Max. I just recently purchased a 87 hydra sport with 87 150 xr2 Black Max. Boat is real sluggish out the whole and will only run 5400 wot. It has a 23p prop. All cylinders have good compression. New stator was put on in March as I was told. Boat only runs 48mph and 5400 rpms.
