They level up when you hatch a certain number of duplicate animals. You can see the number of dupes you’ve hatched and how many you need, in the green bar below the animal. For example, 4/10 means you’ve hatched 4 duplicates and when you reach 10, you level up. 13000 as a score in the individual tournament is more like 10000 actual word score. StarRush inflates the Indy scores, by a LOT, especially if the player completes grids fast without entering bonus words -that makes StarRush bonus points accumulate even faster. There are quite a few expert players who can achieve 10000 in 5 hours.

EDIT 2: OP, I forgot to mention that if you don't play and enter the tournament, you can go into the game some time on Sunday afternoon, and it'll be over for you, even if it's still going on for people that have been playing in it.
