Thinking there has to be some work around, as the controller works fine when it is connected via a cable, but disconnects after a few seconds after it fails to update.

In controller look toward what says “enable steam input for xbox controller” and switch it off. Put it back on if your playing a game on steam though.

SOLUTION FOUND: The controller is in need of a firmware update, to do that via the PC download the "Xbox Accessories" app from the Microsoft Store, wire-up your controller (update via bluetooth is NOT supported) and you should get the option to update the firmware.
