You need to have a piece of gear that has an empty socket, and use the smithing table to apply the gem (assuming it's the same as in ATM7). Once socketed, there's no way to remove the gem without destroying either the gem or the item. It should say " [ ] Empty Socket" near the bottom of the description. Those are the only items that the gems are compatible with. Take that item plus your gem and put them in the blacksmith table.
