Domestic reserve days are inviolate. There are many other work rules, you really need to read the contract. You will not find a UAL pilot sleeping in a plane when the company can't find a hotel. The commuter policy works, but especially as a new hire, give yourself more time. Don't rely on the 2 oversold flights. Start earlier, find a different option. On bad weather days, commute in earlier if possible. As a new hire you are on a much shorter leash when it comes to "dependability" than someone off probation.
